As I walk
in the city streets,
A child approaches me with a grubby tin can,
asking for my loose change.
As I walk
near a tall apartment building,
a young girl stands in her fifth-story balcony
ready to jump.
As I walk
past a hospital,
I see a woman in the upper-story window
and I know that she is slipping away.
As I walk
past a big cathedral,
a nun in her black habbit,
prays silently to the Virgin Mary.
As I walk
near a frozen lake,
a man rises from his cardboard mansion and runs past me.
As I walk
through a large open field,
a dog strains at his unwielding chain.
As I walk
for miles through thick woods,
a boy runs past me; naked and bruised.
As I walk
past a bubbling brook,
a sparrow soars high above me; diving and arcing her way through life.
As I walk
through the beautiful gates,
my Lord and Savior delivers me
from the heartache and sorrow of this world.
